All the sponsoring Institutions of the Western Canada Group of Chartered Engineers, hold a Royal Charter. These Charters describe the Institutions' roles, duties and mission. The Charters also contain the rules and regulations by which the Institutions must carry out their duties. All Institutions with a Royal Charter are qualifying bodies who, along with the Engineering Council, confer full professional status, the title Chartered Engineer (C.Eng) and the title European Ingineur (Eur Ing). The standard of professionalism required to obtain the title C.Eng is recognised and understood worldwide, especially in Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Africa.
The Institutions are "Learned Societies". They all have responsibility for regulating and testing the education, training and practical experience of candidates seeking professional qualifications. They accredit degree courses at Universities, and training schemes in industry. They also act as the voice of the profession in matters of public concern. They all seek to promote high standards of professional conduct.
The seven sponsoring Institutions have a worldwide membership and branches in most major cities in the world. The IChemE is based in Rugby, UK; the other six Institutions are headquartered in London. They all have branches throughout the UK and abroad. Branches hold technical meetings monthly.
The sponsoring Institutions organise hundreds of seminars and conferences, publish highly regarded technical papers, books, journals and magazines, and run several diploma level training courses. All the Institutions have extensive, and internationally referenced, technical libraries. They are recognised in the UK as the accreditation bodies for UK and overseas engineering degree courses and training schemes.
